Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect ‌of a group parenting training program based on acceptance and commitment on social anxiety, distress tolerance, and cognitive fusion ‌of students with social anxiety symptoms. The research design was quasi-experimental‌ with a pretest-posttest ‌‌type with a control group. The statistical population included female students‌ in Tabriz in 2024. Students with high social anxiety symptoms were selected as the purposive sample and their mothers‌ were replaced in two intervention and control groups‌‌. The group parenting intervention program ‌based on acceptance and commitment was performed on the experimental group during 8 sessions of 60 minutes (‌one session per week ) during 3 months only. To collect data in the ‌pre-test-posttest‌ stages‌, Leibeutz's Social Anxiety Scale, Simmons & Gaher's Distress Tolerance, and Gillanders et al.'s Cognitive Fusion Scales were used. Analysis of covariance showed that a group parenting program based on acceptance and commitment had a significant effect on social anxiety, distress tolerance, and cognitive fusion‌in in female students with social anxiety symptoms. Also,‌‌the mean of social anxiety and cognitive fusion in the experimental group was lower than that of the control group and the mean of distress tolerance in the post-test‌ of the experimental group was higher than that of the control group. Considering the effect ‌of a group parenting training program based on acceptance and commitment on social anxiety symptoms, it is recommended to teach this program to individuals with these characteristics‌‌.
