The Role of Maladaptive Personality Trait Dimensions in Predicting Prolonged Grief Symptoms: The Mediating Role of Negative Emotion Regulation

Abstract

The present study aimed to examine the role of maladaptive personality trait dimensions in predicting prolonged grief symptoms, with negative emotion regulation serving as a mediating variable. The research design was correlational and employed structural equation modeling (SEM). The study population consisted of students at Shahid Madani University of Azerbaijan during the 2023–2024 academic year, totaling approximately 6,700 individuals. A multistage cluster sampling method was used, resulting in a final sample of 208 participants. Data were collected using the Brief Form of the Personality Inventory (BF-5-PID), the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ-36), and the Revised Prolonged Grief Disorder Scale (PG-13-R). Descriptive statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS version 26, and structural equation modeling was performed using AMOS version 24. The findings revealed significant positive correlations between maladaptive personality trait dimensions, negative emotion regulation components, and prolonged grief symptoms. Specifically, prolonged grief was significantly associated with self-blame (r = 0.29), other-blame (r = 0.26), rumination (r = 0.42), catastrophizing (r = 0.60), negative affectivity (r = 0.45), psychoticism (r = 0.39), detachment (r = 0.26), antagonism (r = 0.35), and disinhibition (r = 0.39), all of which were significant at the 0.01 level. Furthermore, the proposed model demonstrated a satisfactory goodness of fit. The path coefficients from maladaptive personality trait dimensions and negative emotion regulation to prolonged grief were statistically significant, and negative emotion regulation was found to play a mediating role in the relationship between maladaptive personality traits and prolonged grief symptoms.
